HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINES!

November 10, 2024, marks the 249th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). When it comes to birthday parties, the Maine Corps celebration is like no other.

The birthday is observed wherever Marines are serving, even in combat and harsh environments. The occasion is often marked with parades, special exhibits, birthday run and, the highlight, a Birthday Ball. While each birthday bash is unique to its location and the Marines stationed there, there are some rituals that are common to all.

Major General John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 147 Series 1921 declaring the Marine Corps birthday to be an official Marine Corps holiday. The order also cites the proud history, mission and tradition of the Corps. This order is read at each birthday celebration worldwide. Each Commandant of the Marine Corps releases a birthday message filled with pride, purpose, inspiration and good wishes for every Marine. This message is also part of the celebration.

The cake-cutting ceremony is a favorite tradition with many birthday ball attendees. The first piece of cake is given to the oldest Marine present. The oldest Marine passes the piece to the youngest Marine, a symbolic transfer of wisdom and heritage from experienced Marines to the new generation.

These festivities represent so much more than the passing of another birthday. The U.S. Marine Corps has a proud and storied past – The “Leathernecks” on the shores of Tripoli, “Devil Dogs” at the Battle of Belleau Wood, Navaho Code Talkers, the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi at the Battle of Iwo Jima, Chosin Reservoir and so much more.

Marines have earned their reputation as the world’s most lethal fighting force. No one can improvise, adapt and overcome like a U.S. Marine. With Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, many Marines call the Lowcountry home. On November 10 be sure to tell every Marine you know (there’s no such thing as an ex-marine) “Happy Birthday Marine.”
