When Del Webb dubbed the nearly ten-thousand-acre development nestled between the borders of Beaufort and Jasper Counties in the South Carolina Lowcountry Sun City, he was right on.

To summarize an amalgamation of resources into a simple definition, a ‘city is distinguished from other human settlements by its relatively great size, but also by its functions and activities’.

Inside the borders of this unique development there is so much going on that it would take several posts to this blog to do justice in describing them all. Just to enumerate the larger amenities creates an impressive list:

  • Three golf courses (two full-length, one executive):
    • Argent Lakes
    • Hidden Cypress
    • Okatie Creek
  • A twenty-acre lake (Lake Somerset)

In 1997, when Paul Doerring established "The Cars at The Creek" in Moss Creek Plantation it was a show concentrated on the use of the ‘motor’ in automobiles. Paul Doerring’s dream brought together a few hundred auto aficionados that came to display their vintage automobiles and view those restored and displayed by their fellow enthusiasts. The Cars at The Creek was the direct ancestor of Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance.

Twenty-one years later Doerring’s low key (by comparison) dream has expanded to last ten days and take place in two states.

In 2018, the entire festival will last from October 26 thru November 4, 2018 and will celebrate the colorful history of all motoring experiences from motorcycles to airplanes.

An unbelievably…

discovery museumThere is a destination on Hilton Head Island that combines education, amusement, beauty and several unusual activities for all ages. It is a place of wonder and delight.

It is the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn.

To understand how unique the Coastal Discovery Museum is, it is important to understand not only the history of the museum but to grasp the fact that the museum celebrates the history of the Carolina Lowcountry on a preserve carved out of a plantation that was part of that history.

Honey Horn plantation, is located along Jarvis Creek, a tributary of Calibogue Sound. The plantation, which was originally (around 1805) 13,000 acres of cotton and rice, has experienced the changes brought about by war, economics and development over…

Early in the twentieth century, when the automobile became a device within the reach of more and more Americans, it was referred to by those folks who had lived during an era when most transportation was provided by horses as ‘a motor.’ The word automobile was not part of the English language until 1895 and even then, only in limited use.

By 1997, when Paul Doerring established "The Cars at The Creek" in Moss Creek Plantation it was a show concentrated on the use of the ‘motor’ in automobiles. Paul Doerring’s dream brought together a few hundred auto aficionados that came to display their vintage automobiles and view those restored and displayed by their fellow enthusiasts.

fun food adventures: hilton head & the south carolina lowcountry

One of the activities enjoyed and repeated often by old and new citizens of the South Carolina lowcountry is finding, and frequently visiting, restaurants serving lowcountry cuisine. A word about lowcountry cuisine; it's generally thought to be synonymous with Southern Cuisine -- it isn’t. While it shares qualities and attributes with that other delicious class of dining pleasure, lowcountry cooking has strong parallels with New Orleans and Cajun cuisine. It is rich with the blending of the abundant diversity of seafood from the coastal estuaries with local vegetables and meats.

The most popular and flavorful of these true lowcountry dishes is ‘The Lowcountry Boil.’ Designed to feed groups, inexpensively and dating back to the seventeenth century,…

Each and every day without fail and regardless of what is happening in our world, Hilton Head Island (and most---but not all coastal areas) experiences two high tides and two low tides within a 24-hour period. Our tides are somewhat unique in that they can rise or fall more than 8 vertical feet in only 6 hours, though the average rise and fall is about 6.5 feet. Compare this with offshore (in the deep ocean) tides which have a tidal change of less than 1.6 feet---or to the tides at the Equator (they are are nonexistent)!Hilton Head Tides

The word “tide” defines the alternating rise and fall in sea level with respect to the land. Tides are the periodic rise and falling of large bodies of water. The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in…

hilton head islandWe all know real estate is local—and unique. No matter the city, town or island, each parcel of land, condo, villa, townhouse and home is different. Ergo, trends in San Francisco or Miami or New York City or Aspen do not translate to what is happening on Hilton Head Island with regard to real estate pricing or sales momentum. They just don’t. Though exceptional in their own right, they have a different base with differing desires. Yes, they too are high-end vacation destinations with breathtaking views and luxury amenities and, yes, they too attract a discriminating, educated buyer. However, the comparison stops there. Even closer and seemingly more similar locales such as St. Simons Island or Amelia Island (alike only in that they are islands) are also…
