One of the many attributes of the marvelous South Carolina Lowcountry that visitors and new residents of the area find fascinating is the area’s history.

You can stroll down the lanes of large and small communities, drop into a fifty-year-old restaurant or spend a few hours inside a 177-year-old home. Once in this residence you will experience the culture and history of Bluffton, from inside one of the few structures left standing after the end of the Civil War.

For those who enjoy ‘feeling’ history, visiting some of the historic sites in Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island, the experience is sometimes a bit surreal, like being transported back in time 100, 200 or even 300 years.

Now let your imagination run a little wild and envision living in a…

sun city hilton head entry gate, south carolina

Renovations to the common areas in Sun City continue just as the Lowcountry begins to have that nip of Fall in the air. This is the time of year when residents begin considering a move before the holidays arrive. Some need more space and others begin to downsize. In either situation, there are a few items to consider when choosing real estate on the north side or the south side of Sun City.

Which Is The Right Choice For Me?

The original neighborhoods on the south side of Highway 278 are very established with mature landscaping and many of the amenities available to all residents. The north side is a bit newer and the houses have updated floor plans and styles.

Some of the considerations include homeowner dues, taxes and home amenities that…

When Del Webb dubbed the nearly ten-thousand-acre development nestled between the borders of Beaufort and Jasper Counties in the South Carolina Lowcountry Sun City, he was right on.

To summarize an amalgamation of resources into a simple definition, a ‘city is distinguished from other human settlements by its relatively great size, but also by its functions and activities’.

Inside the borders of this unique development there is so much going on that it would take several posts to this blog to do justice in describing them all. Just to enumerate the larger amenities creates an impressive list:

  • Three golf courses (two full-length, one executive):
    • Argent Lakes
    • Hidden Cypress
    • Okatie Creek
  • A twenty-acre lake (Lake Somerset)

lowcountry shrimp boil

Lowcountry dining has been an experience in healthy, nourishing, fresh foods for as far back as human history in the South Carolina Lowcountry can be traced, 8,000 BC.

Shrimp and Grits, probably the most popular and most consumed dish of the Lowcountry, has been being prepared in much the same way since the mid sixteenth century when it was introduced to the European settlers by the South Carolina coastal tribes of Native Americans.

We are not exactly sure when Native Americans devised the making of Grits from corn, but we do know that Indians were growing maize (an ancestor of modern corn) in South Carolina long before Vasquez de Ayllon, an official in Hispaniola, settled five-hundred colonists on the coast in 1526

Shrimp has been in the…

When you first research living in South Carolina’s Lowcountry you are immediately confronted with the amazing number and diversity of activities available to residents and visitors. Trip Advisor lists twenty-five. Well some of them are not for everyone, like extreme watersports.

The amazing thing about Moss Creek is that within the borders of this one-thousand-acre gated community are so many of the sports, interests and pastimes sought after by people of every age group and background.
