Healthy Activities Series: Biking on Hilton Head Island

If you are not an enthusiastic bicyclist before becoming a Hilton Head, South Carolina resident or vacationer, chances are you will become one.

A gold member of The League of American Bicyclists and a Bicycle Friendly Community since 2011, a look at the biking facilities available make it clear why tourists from the world over come to Hilton Head for the biking.

Hilton Head is an island of just over sixty-nine square miles and it has sixty miles of public bicycle pathways and nature trails maintained by the Town Government. Most of these pathways are paved and wide enough for two cyclists to ride abreast.

Make your home or vacation destination at the famous Sea Pines resort and an additional fifteen miles is added to that remarkable base of sixty miles of public paths. Sea Pines also has several strategically situated stations for renting bicycles of all sizes.

That’s not the final tally of biking facilities, other communities and resorts on the island add an additional thirty-five miles. The impact of that little collection of statistics is awesome, one-hundred-ten miles of maintained bicycle paths on a sixty-nine-square mile island.

Bicycling is one of the most complete exercises invented by humans to both get places and keep the rider alive longer. The activity, besides being a fantastic pastime, is a top-notch aerobic activity, providing your heart, blood vessels and lungs with a workout. While cycling you’ll breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature all of which will improve your overall fitness level.
