The original beach cottages were built in the early 1950s so as to attract more visitors to the newly developed Hilton Head. The beach was pristine and development was sparse. Development standards were stringent then (as now) and residents and out-of-town owners appreciated the significance and vitality of beach quality. Folly Field, though now nearly fully developed after all these years, is still one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island.
Centrally located, Folly Field is convenient to everything Hilton Head has to offer. There are two beach parks in Folly Field, one of which offers public beach access, restrooms, vending machines and a lifeguard on duty. The other is Islander Park and is primarily used by islanders and property owners.
